Pedro Steven Buarque de Macedo M.D.

Dr. Pedro Steven Buarque de Macedo is a Neurologist with thirty years of experience in private practice in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Buarque de Macedo began his education at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where he graduated with a B.S. in Physics, Summa Cum Laude, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. He then received his Medical Doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. During his medical school training, he had an externship in Neurology at Queen’s Square National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London and graduated with Honors for his research in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Dr. Buarque de Macedo then served his internship in Internal Medicine at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Following his internship, he had his residency in Neurology at Georgetown University. In his final year of study served as Chief Resident of Neurology at Georgetown University, Children’s National Medical Center, and Washington D.C. Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Dr. Buarque de Macedo is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. After residency, he trained in Neuropsychology under Dr. Allan Mirsky of the National Institute of Mental Health, one of the key researchers in Attention Deficit Disorder. Dr. Buarque de Macedo is a member of the clinical staff of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Buarque de Macedo has been a member of the medical staff of Sibley Memorial Hospital which is part of the Johns Hopkins system for 30 years. He is also an associate member of the Medstar Georgetown University medical staff.

Dr. Buarque de Macedo has been actively involved in education serving in the past on the clinical faculty of multiple universities in D.C including Georgetown and George Washington Universities. He currently is a Supervisor of Neuropsychology at the Mid Atlantic Internship Consortium of the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. At Washington Medical Group he has supervised numerous Medical Students, Psychology Doctoral Candidates, and Physician Assistant Students. The Psychology Internship at Washington Medical Group has the highest accreditation which is from the American Psychology Association.

Dr. Buarque de Macedo is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Headache Society, and the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology. He has a special interest in the treatment of:

  • Headache – migraine, muscle tension, cluster, TMJ, and chronic daily headaches
  • Psychopharmacology – depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Cognitive disorders –  adult ADHD, mild cognitive impairments, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia
  • Neurorehabilitation – sensory-motor integration, neurocognitive therapies, traumatic brain injuries, and concussions
  • Pain –  spinal pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, neuropathies and complex regional pain syndrome.
